Orthoptics - What is the difference between an Orthoptist, an Ophthalmologist and an Optometrist? An optometrist has the designation “O.D.” (doctor of optometry) which requires 4 years of optometry school after college. Providing primary vision care through sight testing/correcting, treatment, and management of vision changes, optometrists differ from ophthalmologists in that they do not perform eye surgery. An optometrist may refer you to an ophthalmologist if they notice a severe condition in the eye which could be indicative of an underlying disease of the body, for example, diabetes, which may be present as retinopathy. Optometrists are also able to provide prescriptions to correct refractive errors, such as myopia and hyperopia.

The main difference is that, unlike ophthalmologists, neither optometrists, orthoptists nor opticians are required to study medicine like doctors. Because they do not have a medical training or background, optometrists, orthoptists and opticians provide only limited forms of eye care. Or, if an optometrist knows that a patient has diabetes, for example, they can keep a closer eye out for how the condition might impact the person's eye health.
